Fire Protection Designer

Location: On-site – Salt Lake City, Utah

Summary

The Fire Protection Designer is responsible for the design, layout, and coordination of fire protection systems for a variety of commercial, institutional, and industrial projects. This role works closely with engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams to develop code-compliant, efficient, and constructible fire protection designs.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Design fire protection systems including fire sprinkler systems (wet, dry, pre-action, deluge), fire alarm systems (as applicable), and standpipe systems and specialty suppression systems.

  • Prepare detailed design drawings and construction documents using Autodesk Revit.

  • Perform hydraulic calculations and system sizing.

  • Coordinate fire protection designs with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and architectural disciplines.

  • Interpret and apply applicable codes and standards, including NFPA standards (NFPA 13, 14, 20, etc.) and local and state building/fire codes.

  • Assist with specifications, reports, and submittal reviews.

  • Participate in project meetings and coordination efforts.

  • Support construction administration, including RFIs and shop drawing reviews.

  • Ensure designs meet project schedules, budgets, and quality standards.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred  

  • 2+ years of experience in fire protection design (level dependent)  

  • Experience in the AEC consulting environment preferred  

  • Proficiency in Autodesk Revit and/or AutoCAD  

  • Familiarity with hydraulic calculation software (e.g., HydraCALC, SprinkCAD, HASS, AutoSprink RVT) is a plus  

  • Working knowledge of NFPA codes and standards  

  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills  

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines  

Preferred Qualifications

  • NICET certification in Fire Protection Engineering Technology (Level II or higher preferred)

  • Experience with BIM coordination and clash detection

  • Understanding of construction practices and field coordination
