Mechanical Engineer

Location: On-site – Salt Lake City, Utah

Summary

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design and technical execution of HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical systems for complex projects across healthcare, military, higher education, commercial, religious, retail, and industrial sectors. This role requires strong technical expertise in building systems design and coordination within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. The position may serve as a project lead for mechanical scope while collaborating closely with project managers and multidisciplinary teams.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Design and analyze HVAC, plumbing, and hydronic systems for commercial and institutional facilities.

  • Perform load calculations, equipment sizing, and system modeling.

  • Prepare engineering calculations, system layouts, and technical specifications in compliance with ASHRAE, IMC, IPC, NFPA, and applicable building codes.

  • Select and specify mechanical equipment including air handling units, pumps, boilers, chillers, ductwork, and piping systems.

  • Incorporate energy-efficient and sustainable design principles consistent with industry best practices.

  • Serve as the mechanical lead on assigned projects.

  • Coordinate with architects, structural, electrical, and civil engineers.

  • Support development of project schedules and mechanical budgets in collaboration with the Project Manager.

  • Review submittals, respond to RFIs, and participate in construction administration activities.

  • Conduct site visits and field observations to verify installation and resolve technical issues.

  • Perform QA/QC reviews of mechanical designs and documentation.

  • Provide technical guidance to designers and junior engineers.

  • Promote constructability, maintainability, and long-term system performance.

  • Participate in client meetings to define project requirements.

  • Support proposal preparation including scope development and fee input.

  • Maintain professional relationships with clients and industry partners.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD.

  • Experience with Bluebeam and HVAC load calculation software (Trace 700, HAP, EnergyPlus, etc.).

  • Strong working knowledge of ASHRAE, IMC, IPC, NFPA, and related codes.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.

  • PE license.

  • 5+ years of HVAC and plumbing design experience within an AEC consulting environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods working at a computer.

  • Ability to visit construction sites and perform field observations.
